Salt River Housing – Experimental Study is an award-winning residential design project completed during an advanced studio at Arizona State University. The project received the Herberger Design Excellence Award and represents an early exploration of site-driven housing strategies within complex urban and environmental conditions.
The site is located in South Phoenix along the Salt River corridor, a landscape defined by industrial remnants, informal development patterns, and infrastructural boundaries. Rather than treating the site as a blank slate, the design engages these conditions directly, using them as a framework for spatial organization and architectural form.
The project is structured around a central sectional spine that mediates between the rigid logic of the urban grid and the irregular terrain of the river edge. Housing units are organized in a terraced configuration, allowing for variation in elevation, access to light, and spatial diversity while maintaining overall coherence.
Circulation operates as both infrastructure and experience. Bridges, stairs, and layered pathways create a continuous movement system that connects units vertically and horizontally, reinforcing the sectional logic of the project. This approach integrates landscape, structure, and habitation into a unified architectural system.
Formal expression emerges from this relationship between order and condition. Structured volumes align with the grid, while edges and sectional transitions respond to the natural landscape. The result is a housing prototype that challenges conventional suburban patterns and proposes a more adaptive, site-responsive model for urban infill in Phoenix.
This work represents a foundational exploration of themes that continue to define the practice: sectional thinking, landscape integration, and the synthesis of architecture with complex site conditions.
