BIGHORN Spa and Salon
The BIGHORN Spa & Salon was designed as an intimate wellness and fitness facility within the exclusive BIGHORN Golf Club community in Palm Desert, California. Located adjacent to the community tennis complex and surrounded by luxury residential estates, the building was conceived as a refined desert pavilion that integrates spa, fitness, and social spaces into a cohesive architectural experience.
The project was developed during the rapid expansion of the BIGHORN community when the club sought to add a dedicated wellness facility for members. Unlike the large resort-style clubhouses common in private golf developments, this building was intentionally designed at a more intimate scale, allowing it to integrate comfortably between the existing tennis courts while maintaining privacy for surrounding homes.
The architecture responds directly to its desert setting. Low horizontal volumes anchor the building to the landscape while a series of sloping roof planes conceal rooftop mechanical equipment from neighboring residences. These roof forms also create shaded outdoor spaces and introduce daylight deep into the interior program areas. The material palette combines stone, plaster, and glass to create a contemporary desert architecture consistent with the BIGHORN community while maintaining a sense of permanence and craftsmanship.
The plan is organized around a central courtyard and reception sequence that transitions visitors from public arrival spaces into progressively more private wellness environments. Fitness studios, cardio facilities, and group exercise areas are positioned toward the public entry, while locker rooms, hydrotherapy areas, and spa treatment rooms extend toward the rear of the building. This spatial procession culminates in a series of massage rooms accessed through a stone accent wall that forms the architectural spine of the building.
Outdoor gathering areas and landscaped courtyards reinforce the indoor–outdoor lifestyle central to the Palm Desert environment. A fire feature integrated with a water element creates a focal point within the courtyard, providing a quiet social space for members before and after spa treatments.
The completed facility functions as a daily social hub for the community, supporting wellness programs, fitness classes, and informal gatherings among club members. While the BIGHORN clubhouse has undergone major redevelopment since the spa was constructed, the Spa & Salon has remained intact and continues to serve as one of the most active and valued amenities within the community.
The project demonstrates how thoughtful architectural scale, careful site planning, and a strong programmatic sequence can transform a modest building into a lasting center of community life.
