Turquoise House
Located on the slopes below the North Mountain Preserve in Phoenix, the Turquoise House was conceived as a direct response to climate, structure, and the realities of construction. Positioned within a gated hillside community overlooking the west valley, the house is defined by a controlled relationship between mass and view—using form not as expression, but as a device to manage light, heat, and space.
The primary architectural move is an 8-foot cantilever extending beyond the main structure to the outer edge of a continuous glass wall. This overhang is not formal—it is environmental. In the intensity of the Phoenix sun, where temperatures reach 126 degrees, the geometry ensures that the glass remains fully shaded throughout the day, eliminating direct solar gain while maintaining uninterrupted views. The glazing is recessed at both floor and ceiling, eliminating conventional frames and allowing the opening to read as a precise void within the mass of the building.
Structure is intentionally concealed. A steel beam system embedded within the soffit supports the cantilever, allowing the architecture to maintain a clear and controlled edge condition without visible structural expression. The result is a composition where solid and void are calibrated: mass provides thermal protection, while glass is used selectively as an aperture rather than enclosure.
The glazing system itself was developed and resolved in the field. Glass panels are set within a custom steel channel integrated into the slab edge, formed by overlapping welded L-sections that create a continuous recessed pocket. The glass is supported on steel spacers with neoprene isolation, allowing for drainage and preventing direct contact between materials. Above, a steel U-channel provides lateral restraint, allowing the glass to read as a continuous plane from floor to ceiling without exposed mullions.
The initial installation revealed a common failure: wood blocking beneath the glass retained moisture and deteriorated over time. That condition was removed and replaced with a non-organic support system, and drainage was introduced through weep openings drilled into the base channel. The assembly now performs as a drained system, ensuring that water is directed out rather than trapped. Fixing failures is part of the work—most buildings leak, and most problems are ignored or concealed. Here, the detail was corrected and resolved to perform as intended.
Materially, the house is defined by a white stucco exterior, reflecting heat and referencing the desert tradition of mission architecture. The approach draws a lineage to the San Xavier del Bac Mission, where white mass operates both as environmental response and as a spatial marker within the landscape—a sanctuary condition set against the desert.
There is also a cultural continuity in the work that extends beyond form. The project was constructed with direct on-site involvement by the architect, working alongside craftsmen from Oaxaca—indigenous builders whose knowledge of material and assembly is carried through generations. The stair, fabricated in the field, reflects that lineage of making: precise, direct, without excess.
This intersection of language, culture, and construction was present throughout the project. Conversations moved between English and Spanish, between engineering and craft, between drawing and field adjustment. The civil engineer on the project—a Mexican American woman—brought a level of rigor, conviction, and presence that shaped the work in real time. She was not passive in the process; she questioned, pushed, and argued through decisions on site. Not always correct, but fully engaged—fighting for her position, forcing clarity, and elevating the level of attention applied to the work. That friction was not a problem; it was part of the architecture.
It is in this overlap—between educated practice and inherited knowledge, between differing perspectives held with conviction—that the building takes its final form.
The work aligns with a broader Latin American tradition where architecture, art, and economy are inseparable. In the work of Luis Barragán and Frida Kahlo, restraint is not absence but focus—color, light, and mass reduced to essential relationships. Here, that sensibility translates into a kind of no-nonsense construction: make it work in the heat, make it durable, make it clear. Beauty is not applied—it emerges from necessity, from water, shade, and the discipline of building in an unforgiving climate.
Water and shade become the primary lessons of the site. In a landscape defined by scarcity and intensity, architecture is not an abstract exercise but a practical one. Every move is tested against heat, exposure, and time. The Turquoise House is shaped by that reality, where performance and clarity are achieved through building, correcting, and refining the work in place.
Rather than pursuing formal complexity, the house operates through control—of light, of heat, of structure, and of assembly. It is an architecture shaped as much by correction as by intention, where the final form is not imposed, but earned through the act of making.
Architect’s Reflection:
Before construction began, I walked the site with an artist friend. We stood on the rocky slope looking out across the Phoenix valley, and he kept saying the same thing:
“The view, the view… you have to get up there.”
Then he pointed about twenty feet into the air, out toward where nothing existed yet but open space and horizon. That point eventually became the front deck—the west-facing balcony cantilevered from the front facade of the house.
From there the view runs endlessly across the valley. It feels like sitting on a beach watching waves, except the movement is light, distance, and air rolling across the city. It is a place where people can sit in silence and simply watch the horizon.
Then the sun begins to set.
As the light drops, reflections and prisms begin to fracture the sunlight across the glass and polished surfaces of the house. The western sky pours through the structure and reappears inside as reflected light. The view to the west becomes the reflection to the east. Interior and exterior begin to overlap through layers of light, glass, and shadow.
The interior during sunset is difficult to describe. Light fractures through the glass and steel structure, filling the house with reflections of sky, color, and horizon.
